Now That I Can Speak Freely About the Army

Check out Rick Reilly's column on 2LT Caleb Campbell, the West Point cadet allowed to join the NFL draft, only to have the Army rescind its policy after he was already at training camp. I've talked about my point of view on this a bunch on the blog, but I think this column does a good job of summing up what is wrong with the Army's actions.

I always thought the Army made the correct decision to allow him to play while acting as a recruiting ad. Now after learning that they promised him he could play NFL to get him to stay at West Point his final 2yrs I strongly feel he should have been allowed. Congratulation to him for accepting the decision with grace & dignity.
This seems to show up the weakness in the Army's "corporate structure".
What works in war,compartmentalizing decisions because you do not have the time to up the command line, doesn't work for day to day business/operational policy where a more coherent philosophy is needed
